A Safe and Welcoming Heart for Every Edmontonian.
Building a foundation of trust through community-driven advocacy and a decentralized safety framework designed for residents, merchants, and visitors.
In the heart of Edmonton, safety is the vital sign of a healthy community. As the foundational pillar of the Edmonton Chinatown Strategy, our mission is to strengthen safety and security to foster a sense of vibrancy and inclusion. For Chinatown to thrive as a global cultural destination, it must first be a sanctuary for the seniors who call it home and the entrepreneurs who drive its economy.
The Community Beacon Model
The security landscape in our district is defined by the Community Beacon model. Following the transition away from centralized operations hubs, this decentralized framework moves safety resources directly onto every block. By leveraging digital reporting tools and direct community engagement, we ensure that safety is proactive, culturally sensitive, and community-owned. Our approach prioritizes visibility, rapid communication, and the de-escalation of social disorder through environmental design and dedicated local presence.
Strategic Investment
The City of Edmonton demonstrates its commitment through significant financial scaffolding. This includes $800,000 in grants provided to the Chinatown and Area Business Association (BIA) to fund private security resources and an ongoing $480,000 annual Vibrancy Fund to support community-led initiatives that occupy public spaces with positive cultural activity.
Did you know the stone lions at our gates aren't just for decoration?
They are ancient symbols of protection. Just like our Chinatown Ambassadors, they represent the community’s commitment to watching over one another!
