Safety and Community Wellbeing
Improve sense of safety and security: strengthen safety and security in Chinatown to contribute to a strong sense of a vibrant and inclusive place.
A sense of safety and security is essential to any vibrant, flourishing commercial destination. Challenges in Chinatown related to safety affect daily business operations, visitor perception and the ability to promote the area. The coexistence of numerous social agencies that serve vulnerable populations from across the city creates unique sensitivities. Solving these complex challenges requires collaborative action from all partners.
CTC's Approach
- Convene the Edmonton Chinatown Safety Council, a forum where businesses, residents and agencies share experiences, knowledge and ideas.
- Share information with businesses on crime prevention through environmental design.
- Strengthen communication with the City of Edmonton, the Edmonton Police Service and community social agencies.
- Encourage stewardship programs that instill pride in the care of Chinatown's streets and public spaces.
Edmonton Chinatown Safety Council
Unite merchants, residents and social agencies in a shared forum to document safety factors and advocate for collaborative solutions.
The Edmonton Chinatown Safety Council is the district's primary advocacy body on safety and community wellbeing. It advances Action 1.1 of the Chinatown Strategy: a forum where stakeholders share experiences, knowledge and ideas to address impacts on small businesses and residents. The Council documents site-specific safety factors, maps the wellness services operating in and around Chinatown, and coordinates advocacy to municipal, provincial and federal leaders. Its work balances compassion for vulnerable community members with the security of the district.
Members
The Chinatown Transformation Collaborative (CTC), the Chinatown and Area Business Improvement Association (Chinatown BIA), and REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities (REACH).
