Sandra Azocar,
President of AUPE
Sandra Azocar (she/her), lifelong advocate for public services, frontline workers, and equity for all, was elected the President of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) in October 2025, after previously serving as an AUPE Vice-President from 2006-2012 and from 2021-2025. Sandra is AUPE’s third female President, which she has acknowledges adds another layer of honour and responsibility.
Sandra started working for the Government of Alberta in Child Protection Services in 1987 and was an active member of AUPE ever since. Sandra previously chaired the AUPE Pay and Social Equity Committee and the AUPE Women’s Committee, where she tirelessly worked toward fairness, inclusion, and justice in the workplace, notably heading campaigns to fight for living wage, end period poverty, improve seniors’ care, and to improve domestic violence leave.
As the former Executive Director of Friends of Medicare, Sandra has a wide range of experience in leading campaigns in the fight to protect public health care and ensuring policies reflect the real needs of real people.
Sandra lives in Edmonton where she spends as much time as she can spoiling her grandkids.
